Spirit-Led Birth

Inspiring women to apply their Christian faith to the process of birth

About Susana Fierro-Baig

I am the mother of 6 children, expecting my seventh. My first two births were in hospital with CNM's. They were vaginal births, but I consider them " unnatural". I felt deeply that birth didn't have to be painful or scary like that. (It is sure scary seeing a tray of scapels inches away from your most private and tender areas.)

I remember when my dearest friend, Jenny Hatch introduced the idea to me of homebirth with midwives- I was astonished. I began to truly study childbirth. I read so many enlightening books. One of those was Unassisted Childbirth. By this time, I had come to believe homebirth was safe, if not safer than hospital birth. I began to ponder where and with whom I would give birth again.

My husband, Robert with our 3rd UC baby, Danielle

A friend of ours had a UC. This was a VBAC. Just hours after her 10+ pound baby girl was born I delivered a meal to her. As I walked into her room, and observed the peace and love, I felt in my soul, I felt the Spirit of God telling me this was so right. I decided then and there that I would give birth at home also.

My third birth was at home with a lay midwife present. Although I was birthing beautifully, for the first time ever, unafraid and working with the strength of labor, not against it, the midwife began to pressure me into breaking the caul. She said, "This baby would come so much faster if I break the sac."I was shocked that she would even suggest such a thing. (I later learned that she was concerned over missing an appointment with a new client where she was to recieve a large deposit on her fee.) She ended up pressuring me into allowing her to break the sac and my son flew out. About 45 min. later he choked on mucous deep in his chest and turned blue. I believe her interference put my son in jeopardy, even though we resolved the matter in minutes (with suction and oxygen). Because he was born so suddenly, he did not come out naturally, where the pressure squeezes the liquid out of the passage ways.

My next 3 births were UC births with only the help and support of my husband and God. I didn't feel the need to have the support of midwives. I felt guided to rely solely on God to strengthen and guide me.

These births ocurred in peace and privacy, with no pressure, and no vaginal checks. Only freedom, love and joy.Although we are planning another UC, like always we are studying, pondering and praying to know where and with whom we should birth this baby due in March.

Shortly after my third baby was born, I began writing about childbirth and mothering. I wrote several guest editiorials for our local newspaper. I began writing a childbirth book, "Christ-Centered Childbirth." I took a doula training course and began teaching bible-based childbirth classes. I even had an article written about my class and published in the Chicago Tribune. I attended several births and had the pleasure of attending an Indigineous Woman's Conference in Texas where I was priveledged to hear a Mexican midwife share her wisdom.

I did alot in those couple of years after my baby was born. But then I began homeschooling and then had my fourth child. In the years since I have worked on my book some and started several websites. Please visit them:
